Akiba-kei

Encyclopedia : A : AK : AKI : Akiba-kei

Akiba-kei or Akiba-chan is a Japanese slang term similar in meaning to otaku, but without the negative connotations. (American anime fans have adopted otaku as a neutral term; in Japan, however, the word is strictly derogatory - similar to the English "fanboy," but stronger.) Akiba-kei refers to people who are associated with the otaku subculture, but possess the social skills many otaku are popularly believed to lack. The term roughly parallels the English term "geek chic."

Akiba-kei literally means "Akihabara style," referring to a district in Tokyo filled with stores selling electronics, manga, anime merchandise, and other products designed to appeal to the otaku subculture.

The term was popularized in mainstream Japanese culture as a result of the 2005 movie Densha-otoko.
