Akiko Itoyama (絲山秋子, born in Setagaya, Tokyo in November 22, 1966, now living in Takasaki, Gunma) is a Japanese novelist, who won the 134th Akutagawa Prize.

Biography

After graduation from Shinjuku Highschool and [Faculty of Political Science and Economics], Waseda University, she worked as a saleswoman at a major household equipment company, getting transferred several times. She began to write during leaving her job due to treatment of cyclic psychosis. Her works, which mainly cover human relations between townspersons and their affairs, are so appreciated that brought her nominations and winnings for well-known literary awards, including the winning of the 96th Bungakukai New Face Award and nomination for the 129th Akutagawa Prize by her first volume "It's only talk" in 2003. After three consecutive nominations, she finally won the Akutagawa Prize January 2006.

Her exquisite touch got applaused for its expressions of scenary of Japan's province, and accurate strong accents and dialects reflecting characters' mental image, despite her place of origin, metropolitan area of Tokyo. She explains that she learned them through repeated company transferring all over Japan.
