- This article is about the newspaper, for other uses see Al-Ahram (disambiguation).
At the beginning, Al-Ahram was published as a weekly newspaper on every Saturday. The newspaper was founded by two Syrian brothers Bshara and Saleem Teqla who were living at that time in Alexandria, Egypt. The newspaper was distributed in Egypt and Syria. Two months after the newspaper was founded, Teqla brothers decided to make it a daily newspeper. In November 1899 Al-Ahram's headquarter was moved to Cairo.
Some of the early writers in this newspaper are the religious scholar Muhammad Abduh and Jamal al-Din al-Afghani.
According to Reporters Without Borders, Egyptian media ranks 143rd on the list of 167 countries in freedom of the press, a ranking that has fallen in recent years. [link]
