Alboraia

Alboraia (in Valencian; in Spanish, Alboraya) is a town and municipality of the province of Valencia, Spain. It is situated very close to the city of Valencia, capital of the province as well as the Valencia autonomous community.
Originally a farming community, Alboraia has grown in the last decades following the development of the metropolitan area of Valencia. Better transport communications (including 2 stations of the Valencia metro system : Palmaret and Alboraia [link]), urban exodus from the city and foreign immigration have increased the population from 11,267 (1986) to 18,656 (2002 census). Of these 58.84% declared themselves to be Valencian speakers.
In 1994, 45.8% worked in the service sector, 33% in industry, 16.7% in agriculture and 3.60% in construction.
The elections of May 2005 gave the PP an absolute majority with 9 seats. Other seats were represented by the PSOE (3), SIA (Sí Alboraia - Yes Alboraia (2), UnioValencia (1), BLOC-EV (1) and Entensa (1).
Traditional crops are based on irrigated, intensive farming. Specially important are the tiger nuts (Spanish: Chufas; Valencian: Xufes), which are used to produce the world famous horchata, a popular refreshment. The town is actually full of orxateries - bars to relax and chill out while having an horchata in the hot Valencian summers.
