Alfred Ashford
Encyclopedia : A : AL : ALF : Alfred Ashford
Alfred Ashford is a fictional character in the video game, [[Resident Evil Code: Veronica]]. He is the seventh master of the Ashford clan and the younger twin brother of Alexia Ashford. He and Alexia are both the grandchildren of Edward Ashford, one of the founders of the Umbrella Corporation along with Ozwell E. Spencer and James Marcus. A military freak, Alfred is the director of Umbrella's military training facility on Rockfort Island and has worked with various special forces operatives, including HUNK from the Umbrella Security Service. He and his sister seek to restore their family's "glory days", back when Edward Ashford was the master of the clan.
During the events of Code: Veronica, he tries to hunt down heroine Claire Redfield, who was imprisoned on the island and broke free after an assault from an undisclosed competitor of Umbrella.
Background
Alfred Ashford was born as a product of Alexander Ashford's "Code: Veronica" project, an attempt to create an offspring with a level of intelligence on par with Veronica Ashford, the first master of the Ashford clan. He was born in 1971, along with a twin sister named Alexia. Of the two, Alfred only possessed moderately high intelligence compared to Alexia, who was considered a child prodigy.Alfred and Alexia had a very close relationship as they grew up and often did their things together. His close bonding with Alexia eventually lead him to insanity. In 1983, at the age of 12, Alfred and Alexia learned the truth about their birth after discovering Alexander's secret lab within the Ashford's Antarctic facility. Upset about the revelation, he decided to use his father as a guinea pig for Alexia's T-Veronica experiment. The experiment was considered a failure, with Alexander turning into a mindless monster (later codenamed Nosferatu). As a result, Alexia was forced to inject herself with T-Veronica and was put to cryogenic sleep in order to properly develop the virus from within. Alfred was forced to live without his sister for the next fifteen years.
In 1993, Alfred graduated from a university in England and took over both the Rockfort Island's Military Training Facility and the Antarctic Research Facility. He ruled over the island as a complete dictator, torturing and killing prisoners, as well as decorating his facility with all sorts of military paraphernalia. Around this time, he developed a multiple personality disorder, in which he would pose as his sister, Alexia, due to the pain of being separated from her for such an extended time. In 1998, after Albert Wesker's forces attacked Rockfort Island, the T-Virus was unleashed over the island, turning the soldiers from both Umbrella's and Wesker's sides into zombies. During the ensuing confusion, Claire Redfield (who was recently imprisoned) took the opportunity to escape. Alfred tried to hunt down Claire, believing she was a spy under the employ of the ones who attacked the island. Claire would also overhear conversations between Alfred and his "Alexia" personality, believing that they were two different individuals. When Claire (along with fellow prisoner Steve Burnside) attempted to escape from the island (after finding out about Alfred's split personality), Alfred attempted to stop them, first, by releasing an experimental Tyrant model (delivered to him earlier by HUNK) and later, by taking control of their escape plane, forcing them to crash land into the Antarctic facility.
Alfred confronted the two within the Antarctic facility for the last time. While attempting to shoot Claire with his sniper rifle, he was instead shot back in retaliation by Steve and fell into a large gap. Alfred died from his injuries shortly afterwards, but not before awakening the real Alexia from her cryogenic sleep.
