Algarve United is an association football (soccer) club based in Faro, Algarve region, Portugal. They are nicknamed "the Lynxes", after the threatened Iberian Lynx which inhabit the area.
The club was founded in 2004 by Corrado Correggi, (a local businessman who amassed a fortune making corks for fine wine), in partnership with his Scottish father-in-law, John McGovern. Both men are also successful football agents. The club was previously managed by legendary former English player Paul Gascoigne.
The club is rapidly progressing up the league ladder, and it is hoped they will soon be large enough to take over the Estádio Algarve as their home stadium. The stadium was built for the 2004 European Football Championship, but currently stands empty, as no local side can afford to take it on.
