Algeria national football team
Encyclopedia : A : AL : ALG : Algeria national football team
The Algeria national football team, nicknamed Les Fennecs (The Desert Foxes), is the national team of Algeria and is controlled by the Fédération Algérienne de Football. It made two consecutive World Cups in 1982 and 1986.
After upsetting West Germany 2-1 in their first game in 1982, and beating Chile 3-2, Algeria had to wait for the Germans and Austrians to play their last game to know who advanced to the next round. Under the rules of that competition, West Germany played Austria after Algeria had completed their final game, and both sides knew only a 1-0 West German win would lead to both European teams qualifying for the next round.
In one of the most scandalous games in World Cup history, after West Germany scored after 10 minutes, both teams sat back for the next 80, sending Algeria home. FIFA responded to this result by mandating that in all future World Cups, the final group games for all teams would kick off at the same moment. The game is recalled bitterly as
the "Anschluss Game."
Other Success
Algeria won the African Nations Cup in 1990, when they hosted the tournament.
