Alkaline diet

In alternative medicine, an alkaline diet, also called an acid-alkaline diet, is a diet which is approximately 80% alkaline producing and 20% acid producing. The theory behind this diet is that the pH produced by our diet should reflect the pH level of our bloodstream, which is approximately 7.36, and that if it does not, the pH of our bloodstream may be disrupted.
This means that the alkaline diet tends to avoid meat, poultry, most types of fish, their by-products, dairy products, processed food, alchohol, tobacco, drugs, sugar (including high levels of fructose) and saturated fats, as they all leave an extremely acidic ash in the body after digestion. The diet consists mostly of natural high water fruit and vegetables, nuts, legumes, seeds, essential fatty acids and a high alkaline water intake.
The practice of eating an alkaline diet is called alkalarianism, and the practitioners alkalarians. These terms were coined by Dr. Robert Young[The Alkalarian Approach To Optimal Health]. whose advocacy of the diet is based on the research into health and nutrition published in his books Sick and Tired, The pH Miracle,The pH Miracle, Dr. Robert Young and Shelley Redford Young, Warner Books, 2002 (ISBN 0446528099.) The pH Miracle for Diabetes, and The pH Miracle for Weight Loss. The alkalarian lifestyle is also exalted by optimum performance coach Tony Robbins, particularily in his audio series Living Health and Get The Edge, and long distance runner Stu Mittleman in his book Slow Burn.
