Altadis S.A. is a multinational purveyor of tobacco and cigar manufacturer. Altadis is the product of a 1999 merger between Tabacalera, the former Spanish tobacco monopoly and SEITA, the former French tobacco monopoly.
West Europe’s third largest cigarette manufacturer, Altadis produces and sells blond and dark cigarettes. The cigar market comprises just a few major global players. Altadis is the world leader, far ahead its competitors and, above all, the only top-tier player in the major markets of the United States, Spain and France. It is also the only company to offer a portfolio of prestige Cuban brands, thanks to its acquisition of a 50% interest in Habanos SA in 2000. Altadis also purchased General Cigar & Lane Limited in the USA. General Cigar was a large purveyor of Cigars such as Macanudo, and the Dominican made Romeo y Juilietta. Lane Limited is the largest purveyor of RYO tobaccos and includes such brands as Bugler and Midnight Special.
