Altona is a western suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Hobsons Bay.
Altona is one of the more peaceful suburbs of Melbourne. It is also home to many parks, reserves and other beautiful landmarks including Altona Beach, Cherry Lake and Altona Coastal Park.
Prior to local government amalgamations, Altona and surrounding suburbs were part of the City of Altona municipality. Many residents still use the name Altona to refer to Altona & surrounding suburbs which include: Altona North, Altona Meadows and Seaholme. The area has many shopping facilities such as Central Square, Pier St., Borrack Square and Altona Gate.
Altona and its surrounding suburbs are very livable areas with very good access to major highways, freeways, public health, schools, recreation facilities, shopping, parking and public transport.
Industry
Major industry includes petrochemical production. This was a major environmental concern to residents in the 1970's and 1980's, however strict environmental controls and local projects involving industry, government and environmental groups have reduced these concerns, cleaning up coastal areas that were once neglected by industry and government.
Education
These are many primary schools in Altona, including Seaholme Primary School and Altona Primary School. The high schools in Altona include Altona Secondary College, Mt St Joseph Girls College, St Paul's Boys College, and St Mary's School.Sport
It is home of many social clubs sport centres including Australian rules football, soccer, hockey, basketball, rugby league and cricket.Transportation
