Amarant Coral
Encyclopedia : A : AM : AMA : Amarant Coral
Amarant Coral (Salamander Coral in the Japanese version) is a fictional character from the PlayStation video game Final Fantasy IX. He often goes by the nickname "Flaming Amarant". Amarant is most likely a half-giant, which accounts for his bluish skin and height (although the game's non-proportional style makes it difficult determining the characters' heights). Amarant's odd proportions also bear more than a passing resemblance to the Guado of Final Fantasy X. He uses various gloves, or knuckles, as weapons, much like Final Fantasy's monk character class, but additionally possesses the "Throw" command, normally associated with the ninja class.
He is a friendly rival with Freya and they seem to have some sort of kinmanship, and perhaps even slightly more than that.
Amarant's extended past is not addressed during the game. However, immediately prior to the start of Final Fantasy IX, Amarant is one of the most wanted bandits in Treno. However, he is actually innocent but does not tell anybody because he detests revealing his personal life. The person who actually committed the crime was Zidane, and Amarant was merely the guard who tried to stop him but was instead framed for it. He works as a bounty hunter with Lani until Zidane defeats him (Lani later lives with Eiko's moogles). After his defeat, he follows the thief to understand his philosophies on fighting and friendship.
During most of the adventure, Amarant rarely speaks outside of battle. However, Amarant's "loner" traits culminate during the raid on Ipsen's Castle. Feeling the need to locate a set of mirrors independently, Amarant leaves the party to travel through the castle alone. However, Amarant falls and nearly dies; he is quickly saved by Zidane, who was preparing to leave the castle. After this point, Amarant changes most of his arrogant features.
