American Falls is a city in Power County, Idaho, United States. The population was 4,111 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Power County[Geographic references#6GR6].

In 2004, William Thomas Middle School in American Falls, ID was award the National Principal of Secondary Schools Award.

American Falls, ID was also the first town in the United States to be entirely moved from one place to another. This was done to facilitate construction of the nearby American Falls Dam. The old townsite sits at the bottom of the reservoir created by the dam.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 4,111 people, 1,429 households, and 1,063 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,030.7/km² (2,674.5/mi²). There were 1,557 housing units at an average density of 390.4/km² (1,012.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 81.56% White, 0.15% African American, 1.00% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 15.15% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 27.83% of the population.

There were 1,429 households out of which 40.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.34.

In the city the population was spread out with 33.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,955, and the median income for a family was $35,435. Males had a median income of $27,317 versus $21,209 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,891. About 12.7% of families and 17.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.0% of those under age 18 and 16.3% of those age 65 or over.
