American High School is a secondary school located at 18350 NW 67 Avenue in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida; its principal is Dr. Louis J. Algaze.
American was built and opened in 1976 and was named so because this was the year of America's bicentennial. Its mascot and colors were chosen to reflect this. The school uses a Hialeah address but mainly serves the city of Miami Gardens. In 2005, a school shooting plot was discovered amongst its students when a note was discovered in a restroom with students' names and the word "hitlist" at the top. This event forced the closing of the school for two days and also forced local police to offer security services until the end of the school year.
