Americans for Democratic Action

Encyclopedia : A : AM : AME : Americans for Democratic Action

Americans For Democratic Action (ADA) was formed in January 1947 by Eleanor Roosevelt, John Kenneth Galbraith, Reinhold Niebuhr, Hubert Humphrey and 200 other activists. They made a break with others on the left in that they believed that it was not enough to not be a Communist; one must be an anti-communist. They regarded defending America from totalitarian foes as a first principle. Saying that it is better to "light a candle rather than curse the darkness", they constituted an alternative to the anti-communism of Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy whom they believed threatened the New Deal. Those that were part of this group did not like dogma because they believed that America should be ideology free. The reason for the rejection of ideology was because they didn't believe that there was any type of theory that would solve and be the end of all society's problems.
