Amityville is a village in Suffolk County, New York, in the United States. The population was 9,441 at the 2000 census.
'' Amityville is best known for being the setting of the best-selling book and popular movie, The Amityville Horror, which is purportedly based on the real-life mass murder of the DeFeo family in 1974 at 112 Ocean Avenue. The address was later changed to "108 Ocean Avenue" in order to avoid ghost hunters and demonologists attracted by the book's ghost story. The house in question was renovated. A remake of The Amityville Horror was released in the Spring of 2005.

Amity Island, the setting of the 1975 film Jaws got its name from Amityville. (See discussion page for clarification) The 2004 animated series Danny Phantom also has those similarites. However, it's known as Amity Park..Notable Residents
Famous Amityville residents include NBA Player Mike James, Astronaut Kevin Kregel, Al Capone, George Lutz, and Annie Oakley. Amityville has also spawned the famous Emo Rock band Taking Back Sunday, who have found global commercial success. Hip-Hop group De La Soul also got their start here, as students of Amityville High School, and released their debut LP 3 Feet High and Rising soon after. It was the first place in the USA to find an infestation of the Asian long-horned beetle in 1996 on a large tree right on the corner of Wilson Ave. and Kerrigan Rd. directly adjacent to Tanner Park.[[Citing sources citation needed]] Thomas Cappilino Resides here. As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 9,441 people, 3,434 households, and 2,266 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,744.1/km² (4,508.4/mi²). There were 3,577 housing units at an average density of 660.8/km² (1,708.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 84.34% White, 8.54% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.28% Asian, 3.32% from other races, and 2.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.18% of the population.There were 3,434 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.8% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 27.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.15.
In the village the population was spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.5 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $61,885, and the median income for a family was $72,632. Males had a median income of $52,011 versus $35,055 for females. The per capita income for the village was $27,750. About 5.6% of families and 7.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.1% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
