Amstel (derivation from 'Aeme stelle', old Dutch for: 'area abounding with water') is the river in the Netherlands from which Amsterdam took its name.
History
After the construction of a dam in the mouth of the river, a fishing-village "Amstelredam" came into existence and was granted city-rights around 1300. The hamlet developed into the small town "Amsteldam" that gained importance as a result of its position at the inland sea "Zuiderzee".The Amstel brewery was situated close to the Amstel river of which the water was used to cool the beer.
