Loki caught him (with a net provided by Ran) and forced him to give up his gold and Andvarinaut. Andvari cursed Andvarinaut with the threat that it would destroy whoever owned it, leading (inevitably) to much misfortune.
After the deaths of Brynhild and Sigurd, Gunnar leaves Andvari's gold in a cave. Years later Andvari discovers the cave and his lost gold. However, his ring is lost forever.
