Anglo American plc (LSE: [AAL]) is a world-wide group of companies, originally founded in South Africa as a mining enterprise but now extending into other areas. Natural resources remains the focus of its operations. Its headquarters are in London, UK. It has its primary listing on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.

History

The origins of Anglo American lie in the Anglo American Corporation which was founded in 1917 by Sir Ernest Oppenheimer. The name derives from the locations of the sources of finance that were raised to form the company. The current company was formed in 1999 when it merged with Minorco. Its gold mining operations were spun off into the separate AngloGold corporation, which later merged with the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation to form AngloGold Ashanti.

Subsidiaries

The group's subsidiaries include Tarmac (UK), Copebras (Brazil) and Mondi. It also holds 45% of De Beers. [link]
