Japan
Established on May 20, 1998, Animax originally premiered on July 1, the same year, in Japan on the SKY PerfecTV! platform. It has been involved in the production of several anime series, such as [Animax's corporate page] at Anime News Network's Encyclopedia, Ultra Maniac, Hungry Heart - Wild Striker, Whistle! and Shakugan no Shana, and is directly affiliated with several anime studios and production enterprises, such as Sunrise, Bandai Visual, and GONZO, with whom it signed a long-term output deal in June 2006, which will see Animax broadcasting all of GONZO's anime titles across all of its networks around the world, including Japan, Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, South America, and other regions.[Animax Asia Signs New Output Deal with GDH] - Animax press release, Anime News Network, June 21, 2006.Asia
Animax premiered in Taiwan on January 1, 2004, and in Hong Kong on January 12, 2004, featuring its anime programming within separate seeds in the respective regions and languages. It started its operations across Southeast Asia and the Philippines, on January 19, 2004, featuring its programming within seeds in English and other languages in the region. On July 5 2004, Animax started operations in South Asia, specifically the entire Indian Subcontinent, featuring its programming within seeds in English and other languages. It has broadcast several highly popular anime series, including ', as well as its , Cowboy Bebop, InuYasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, Honey and Clover, Rurouni Kenshin, the DragonBall series, Cardcaptor Sakura, Tsubasa Chronicle, Vision of Escaflowne, YuYu Hakusho, Wolf's Rain, Tweeny Witches, as well as several highly-rated OVA series and anime films, such as Steamboy, Ghost in the Shell, ', Escaflowne and many others. Animax have translated and dubbed entire anime television series themselves, and features its own original English translation and dubbing team, who have dubbed many of their series, some of which were not licensed by American distributors and do not have any English adaptation counterparts, such as Detective School Q, Clamp School, Hungry Heart - Wild Striker, Emma - A Victorian Romance, , the latest of them being the highly-rated Honey and Clover series. Animax have also aired uncensored English versions of anime series, among the most notable of them being their dub of Cardcaptor Sakura, which was shown uncensored and retained all of the original names, plot details and dialogue, and many others. Animax also features their own Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Hindi, Tagalog dubbing and translation teams.Speculation
After the acquisition of MGM/UA by a group of investors led by Sony and Comcast, the two entertainment companies have formed a joint venture that will launch several cable networks in the United States. Media observers have repeatedly suggested that Sony and Comcast will launch an American version of Animax, though Comcast currently owns a competing network, G4. If Animax launches, its primary competitors in the United States would be ADV's The Anime Network, The Funimation Channel, and Cartoon Network.See also
