Recent Events
Cancellation of Entrance Exams
In June 2005, the Government of Tamil Nadu decided to discontinue the TNPCEE, an entrance examination for professional courses in all Engineering and Medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, that is held annually by Anna University, and base admissions into professional courses solely based on the Higher Secondary school examinations. This order was challenged in the court. The court decided to go with the TNPCEE model for admission. So, for the year 2006, the admission process will be very similar to previous year. Infact, this year more number of seats will be surrendered to the single window system from the majority colleges.Controversy over Dress Code and Mobile Phones
In September 2005, the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, Dr. D. Viswanathan, issued an edict prescribing a dress code for the students of Anna University and its affiliated colleges, a move that has invited widespread condemnation and ridicule from student bodies, social activists and writers. The dress code has been accused of being sexist, as it forbids female students from wearing certain types of clothes, including jeans, T-shirts, skirts and sleeveless or tight-fitting dresses. In a logic defying step by the university authorities, students have also been disallowed from possessing mobile phones on campus.
The backlash seems to have taken the university administration unawares, and it has since toned down its approach. The Vice-Chancellor has clarified that there will be no "military-like" strictness in enforcing the code, and that the dress code is not limited to girls: the rule forbidding jeans and T-shirts also extends to the men students at the university. Though that's what he said, that thing is enforced with military-like strictness and he even went to the entent of confiscating mobile phones from the students in the hostel who use them as their only means of communication with their parents. The students are also unhappy about the fact that the Vice chancellor doesn't obey to these rules when he came to college one day on a gothic mesh shirt and a jeans pant and ofcourse uses his mobile phone in the campus. Students are protesting that this is a violation of rights of the students. The students' leader said "In this democratic country when we were given the right to vote after you reach eighteen years, why not choose your own dress. The institution must look forward to developing the infrastructure, facilities and quality of education rather than involving in such gimmickry"
