Biography

Character history

Anne (rumored to be born Joan Appleby) was born in 1981. Her birth name was revealed in the script of Buffy season two's Lie To Me. Although a minor human character, her Chameleon-esque abundance of identities have made her an intriguing personality. A homeless girl from an implied abusive household, Joan spent her adolescence joining whatever cult offered her a place and protection, changing her identity as she changed groups. At one point, she followed a "loser preacher" and called herself "Sister Sunshine". She was first introduced in Buffy season two's Lie To Me as "Chantarelle", a member of the Sunset Club, a naïve cult who worshipped vampires, or "The Lonely Ones", as misunderstood creatures burdened with immortality, higher beings who brought mortals into a more enlightened state of mind. She learned the true nature of vampires when the club was raided by a blood-thirsty Spike where she was saved from being drained by Buffy.

Chantarelle later fell in love with a homeless boy named Ricky T. and with no money or drive, was forced to become a street kid. Here, she became "Lily Houston", a name Ricky picked out for her after a song lyric. In Buffy Season Three's Anne, Lily again met Buffy who had also escaped to the big city after having to kill Angel. In order to stay anonymous, Buffy was calling herself by her middle name, Anne, and working at a diner. Later, Ricky went missing and Lily pleaded for Buffy to help her find him. This led them into a hell dimension where they briefly became imprisoned as slaves in a demonic sweat shop. After they had liberated some of the prisoners and butchered the demons responsible, Buffy decided to return to Sunnydale. She left her waitress job at Helen's Kitchen, apartment and identity to Lily.

Over the next three years, Lily, now "Anne Steele", settled down in Los Angeles and became an administrator at a shelter for homeless teenagers called The East Hills Teen Center. Here, she met Charles Gunn and most of his vampire hunting gang who were living in poor conditions at the time. She had moved out of Buffy's run down apartment and was living at 5632 Willoughby Avenue.

In Angel season two's Blood Money, when the corrupt company Wolfram & Hart presented itself as a benefactor to the shelter, Angel convinced Anne to expose their plans to pocket a majority of the money raised on behalf of the shelter. However, Angel was merely trying to mess with W&H's Lindsey McDonald and Lilah Morgan, while an old honorable adversary stole the funds, which Angel offered to Anne. She accepted, despite the fact that the money was covered in Boone's red blood.

She helped Gunn, Wesley and Cordelia find sanctuary in her shelter from undead police officers in Angel season two's The Thin Dead Line, but was not seen again until the final episode of Angel; season five's Not Fade Away. During what Gunn assumed would be his last day alive, he chose to assist Anne at the shelter, which was apparently quite successful. Gunn asked Anne what she would do if she knew it was all pointless; she asserted that she would still do whatever needed to be done to help make the world a better place.

Anne's later choice of names could be interpreted as a reflection of her maturity. Her first (or the audience's first introduction to her) was by the name of Chanterelle; a delicate, exotic mushroom. The next name was Lily; a delicate, exotic flower. The last incarnation is a sturdy, every day first name - Anne - with a hard edged surname to match - Steele. This tells us Anne is now firmly grounded in reality, and she is a person of substance, someone to be reckoned with.

PLEASE DISCUSS CHARACTER ADDITTIONS/REMOVALS BEFORE MAKING CHANGES AT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Buffyverse#Buffyverse-box_character_inclusions)

This box cannot/shouldn't be including every Buffyverse character. Some suggested guidelines are:

"The people who appeared in the opening credits (Scooby Gang & Fang Gang/FG) appear in the box, and the most important villains/friends who had a significant emotional impact on multiple of those opening credits characters - as long as they have a significant episode count, and preferably if they appear in three or more seasons."
