Anson Carter

Encyclopedia : A : AN : ANS : Anson Carter

Anson Carter (Born - June 6, 1974 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian professional ice hockey right winger in the National Hockey League who has played for the Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks.

Playing career

Carter was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, 10th round, 220th overall, after starring at Michigan State University. He has previously played for the Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, and Los Angeles Kings. He spent several years as one of the Oilers' top players, before being traded to New York, along with Ales Pisa, in 2003 for Radek Dvorak and Cory Cross. This was only the first of several moves for Carter as the next year he was sent to Washington as part of the Jaromir Jagr deal. When at the end of the season Washington traded away almost all its most expensive players Carter was sent to Los Angeles. During this turbulent period, Carter failed to meet expectations and had far less impact than he had had in Edmonton.

On August 16, 2005, he signed with the Vancouver Canucks for the 2005-06 Season for a 1-year deal worth $1 million. He plays in Vancouver on the second offensive line with identical twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin, where the trio are sometimes known colloquially as the Brothers Line. He scored a season high 33 goals in his 2005-2006 NHL season with the Vancouver Canucks and was the team's leading goal scorer--beating out Canuck captain Markus Naslund's tally by only 1 goal.[link] His previous season high was 28 goals with the Oilers.

Carter is affectionately known as "Soul Brother" by fans and pundits alike.

Scouting Report

Carter is known as a fast-skating forward with the ability to handle the puck with aplomb and release his shot from anywhere in the offensive zone. While not a prolific goal-scorer, Anson's above-average offensive instincts have allowed him to become a five-time 20 goal-scorer, including a career high 33 goals in 2005-2006. While sometimes criticised by coaches and fans for what appears to be a lackadasical approach to the defensive end of the game, Carter is normally reliable in his own end and has made a more concentrated effort to improve his two-way game in recent years.

Carter's offensive talents have allowed him to become a valuable top six forward in the NHL, but a more physical style of play from him would no doubt help to improve his overall game as Carter stands a solid 6'1 and 210 pounds. This lack of physicality has prevented him from becoming a more dominating force on the ice. Despite these drawbacks however, Carter remains a valuable offensive asset and shall no doubt continue to play a highly valuable role on one of the top two lines of whatever team he performs for.
