Anthony Salerno

Encyclopedia : A : AN : ANT : Anthony Salerno

right Anthony Salerno (May 1, 1911 - July 27, 1992) was a member of the US Mafia and headed the Genovese family during the 1980s. Usually seen wearing a fedora hat and chomping on a cigar, he was nicknamed Fat Tony Salerno due to his being overweight.

He was born and raised in East Harlem and progressed through the ranks of the New York mafia through crimes such as loansharking and protection rackets. In 1981, following the death of Frank Tieri, Salerno apparently became the head of the Genovese Family, although it was subsequently revealed by an informant that he was only a front man, and the real head of the Genovese Family was Vincent Gigante.

In 1987 Salerno was convicted on RICO Act charges in the Mafia Commission Trial. He died in prison from natural causes just five-years into a 100-year prison sentence.

It is possible that Fat Tony in The Simpsons is named after him.
