In 1988, an attempt was made on Lahad's life by a Lebanese woman named Soha Bechara. Though seriously injured, Lahad survived the assassination attempt, while his would-be assassin was lauded by many in Lebanon and beyond as a heroine.
Following the collapse of his militia, Lahad fled to Israel. He has family members in France, but the French authorities have denied him permission to live in France.
Lahad lives in Tel Aviv, where he manages a Lebanese restaurant. He desires to return to Lebanon, but says he likes Tel Aviv, "It is like Beirut, a Mediterranean city where people are warm and lively."
