Aoi no Ue

Aoi no Ue (jp: kanji 葵の上, hiragana あおいのうえ) is a fictional character in The Tale of Genji (genji monogatari). Her name is very roughly translated as Lady Aoi. The chapter Aoi is named after her. She was the first wife of Prince Genji. Although they remained distant for most of their married life, when she died during child-birth, he was inconsolable.

Aoi no Ue is the title character of a noh play.
