The genus Aptenodytes (from the Greek for "flightless diver") contains two extant species of penguins collectively known as "the great penguins".

• King Penguin, Aptenodytes patagonicus
• Emperor Penguin, Aptenodytes forsteri

Ridgen's Penguin (Aptenodytes ridgeni) is an extinct species known from fossil bones.
