Map of Kazakhstan showing Aqtöbe province.
Aqtöbe is a province of Kazakhstan. The Aqtobe provincial capital is the city of Aqtöbe, with a population of 267,000. The province itself has a population 661,000. The area of the province is 300,600 square kilometers, making it the second largest province of Kazakhstan, after Qaraghandy. Aqtobe Province borders Russia to the north and Uzbekistan to the south, and also borders six other Kazakh provinces: Atyrau Province, Mangghystau Province, Qaraghandy Province, Qostanay Province, Qyzylorda Province, and West Kazakhstan Province (Batys Qazaqstan). The Ilek River, a tributary of the Ural River, flows through the province. The name "Aqtöbe" comes from Kazakh "aq" (white) and "töbe" (hill); supposedly Aqtöbe's initial settlers were able to see white mountains far to the north.
