Araunah

Encyclopedia : A : AR : ARA : Araunah

Araunah (name meaning "agile"), also called Ornan, was a Jebusite who lived in Jerusalem before it was taken by the Israelites. When the destroying angel came to punish David for his vanity in census-taking, he was stayed in his work near Araunah's threshing-floor on Mount Moriah. Araunah offered it, along with the oxen and threshing instruments, to David as a free gift, but the king refused, as he could not offer to God a sacrifice which had cost him nothing. Solomon afterwards erected the temple on the same place.

Araunah is mentioned numerous times in the second Book of Samuel and in both Books of Chronicles.
