Arnstadt

Arnstadt is a town in Ilm-Kreis, Thuringia, Germany. It is nicknamed Das Tor zum Thüringer Wald, The Gate to the Thuringian Forest.
Arnstadt was first mentioned in 704 from the Arnestati. It is the oldest place to be mentioned in Thuringia. In 1204, it received municipal rights.

- The composer Johann Sebastian Bach, whose family lived for generations in the vicinity of Arnstadt, began his musical career in the city. Most Bach scholars believe his well-known "Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor" was written here around 1707-09.
