Arrecifes is a city in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.

History: In September 20th, 1586 the first ranch ("estancia") in the "Pago de los Arrecifes" was created. The first population at the Arrecifes river banks appeared after 1600. At this time it was a forced path to cross the Arrecifes river in the route to Alto-Peru and Chile. In 1767, The "Cabildo" (In the Spanish colony, cabildos were in charge of the city administration and the justice) created the Arrecifes district, the second in the province. In 1785, the first mayor of the city is elected. March 1st, 1856 The first City hall is built and the local goverment established. In 1950 it is declared City

Location: Arrecifes is located in the North of the Buenos Aires province at 175 km northwest from Buenos Aires City. It is the head city of the Bartolome Mitre district.

Economical Activity: Arrecifes has an aproximate surface of 100.000 hectares. The main economical activity is farming. Fields of soy beans, corn and wheat are common around Arrecifes. The city is also an important center of textil factories.

Inhabitants: Aproximately 30,000 (census 2001)
