Arrondissements of the Ariège département

In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Ariège département of France has 3 arrondissements. These are:

  1. Arrondissement of Foix, (préfecture of the Ariège département: Foix) with 9 cantons and 135 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 51,790 in 1990, and was 50,114 in 1999, a decrease of 3.24%.
  2. Arrondissement of Pamiers, (sous-préfecture: Pamiers) with 7 cantons and 115 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 58,442 in 1990, and was 61,058 in 1999, an increase of 4.48%.
  3. Arrondissement of Saint-Girons, (sous-préfecture: Saint-Girons) with 6 cantons and 82 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 26,223 in 1990, and was 26,033 in 1999, a decrease of 0.72%.
