Arrondissements of the Aude département
In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Aude département of France has 3 arrondissements. These are:
- Arrondissement of Carcassonne, (préfecture of the Aude département: Carcassonne) with 18 cantons and 207 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 137,221 in 1990, and was 141,890 in 1999, an increase of 3.4%.
- Arrondissement of Limoux, (sous-préfecture: Limoux) with 8 cantons and 149 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 42,247 in 1990, and was 41,489 in 1999, a decrease of 1.79%.
- Arrondissement of Narbonne, (sous-préfecture: Narbonne) with 9 cantons and 82 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 119,244 in 1990, and was 126,391 in 1999, an increase of 5.99%.
