Arrondissements of the Haute-Garonne département
In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Haute-Garonne département of France has 3 arrondissements. These are:
- Arrondissement of Muret, (sous-préfecture: Muret) with 11 cantons and 126 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 133,989 in 1990, and was 154,872 in 1999, an increase of 15.59%.
- Arrondissement of Saint-Gaudens, (sous-préfecture: Saint-Gaudens) with 11 cantons and 236 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 74,162 in 1990, and was 71,959 in 1999, a decrease of 2.97%.
- Arrondissement of Toulouse, (préfecture of the Haute-Garonne département: Toulouse) with 31 cantons and 226 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 717,811 in 1990, and was 819,507 in 1999, an increase of 14.17%.
