Arrondissements of the Sarthe département
In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Sarthe département of France has 3 arrondissements. These are:
- Arrondissement of La Flèche, (sous-préfecture: La Flèche) with 7 cantons and 71 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 83,330 in 1990, and was 87,199 in 1999, an increase of 4.64%.
- Arrondissement of Mamers, (sous-préfecture: Mamers) with 10 cantons and 134 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 77,028 in 1990, and was 79,407 in 1999, an increase of 3.09%.
- Arrondissement of Le Mans, (préfecture of the Sarthe département: Le Mans) with 23 cantons and 170 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 353,296 in 1990, and was 363,245 in 1999, an increase of 2.82%.
