History
The village was known as Esshamstede in the 13th and 14th centuries.The parish church of St. Clement dates from the 12th century and has frescoes from the 13th century and a wooden bell turret from the 15th century. It is believed that the frescoes may have been commissioned from Lyre Abbey in Normandy, France. The only remaining bell dates from 1662.
