Ashland, Inc. (or simply, Ashland) NYSE: [ASH] is a transportation, construction, chemical, and petroleum company providing innovative products, services and solutions. Ashland, Inc. was founded in 1924 as Ashland Refining Company of Ashland, Kentucky by Paul G. Blazer. The original oil refinery, located in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, is still in operation today and is currently owned by Marathon Oil. Ashland Inc. is best known for their automotive lubrication products which are sold under the name Valvoline. Ashland Inc is named for Ashland, Kentucky, the city the company was founded in.

In 1998, Ashland, Inc.'s petroleum division merged with Marathon Oil to form Marathon Ashland Petroleum, LLC.

In 1999, Ashland, Inc. moved their headquarters from Russell, Kentucky to Covington, Kentucky.

In 2005, Ashland, Inc. sold its shares of Marathon Ashland Petroleum, LLC, to Marathon Oil, effectively dissolving the remnants of their petroleum division.
