Ashley's stopper knot, also known as Oysterman's stopper, is a knot designed by Clifford W. Ashley around 1910. It's primarily used to add security to an existing knot by creating a "stopper" at the end of the rope, preventing the end from slipping through the knot.
Essentially, the knot is designed as a common slipknot, but with the end of the rope passing through the free loop of the slipknot.
Ashley designed this knot after seeing it on a boat in a local oyster fishing fleet (Budworth, 118). When he had a chance to observe the knot up close at a later time he realized it was just a badly water-swollen figure eight knot. He subsequently patented the knot.
