Askesis is the discipline of repressing lust. In the Greek language, Askesis means trial. Originally introduced as the spiritual struggle of the Greek Orthodox Church as the style of life where meat, alcohol, sex, and comfortable clothing are avoided, the term is now used in several other relations:
- A defense mechanism in psychology where feelings of lust are avoided, just as every situation that leads to lust.
- The term was adopted by the Christian Church as a way monks should live.
