Assam Agricultural University was established in 1969 under the Assam Agricultural University Act l968 (Assam Act XXIV of l968) vide Governor's notification LJL l8/67/l0 dated the January 2, l969. [Web archive of the official University site].

The objectives of the University are:

To make provision for imparting education to the people in agriculture and other allied branches of learning
To further the advancement of learning and research in agriculture and other allied sciences
To undertake the extension of such sciences specially to the rural people of the state.

Assam Agricultural University (AAU) is the only educational centre in the world to offer a comprehensive four-year degree programme in Agriculture with specialisation in Tea Husbandry and Technology (THT).

THT covers the entire gamut of tea cultivation, production and marketing.

The AAU campus in Jorhat also has a College of Home Science. The university offers B. Sc (Agri.) and M. Sc (Agri.) courses as well as B. Sc and M. Sc Home Science courses.
