Assens municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Funen County on the west coast of the island of Funen in central Denmark. The municipality includes the islands of Helnæs and Bågø, and covers an area of 139 km². It has a total population of 10,899 (2005). Its mayor is Truels Schultz, a member of the Christian Democrats Kristendemokraterne) political party.
The municipality's main town and the site of its municipal council is the city of Assens.
Neighboring municipalities are Haarby and Glamsbjerg to the east, Aarup to the north, and Ejby to the northwest. To the west and south is the Little Belt.
The island of Helnæs is connected to the municipality by road. Ferry service connects the municipality at the city of Assens to the island of Bågø.
The municipality was formed in 1966 by combining formerly-existing Assens municipality with seven other smaller municipalities located around it.
By January 1, 2007 Assens municipality will cease to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will combined with existing Glamsbjerg, Haarby, Tommerup, Vissenbjerg and Aarup municipalities to form the new Assens municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 513 km² and a total population of 41,201 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Syddanmark ("South Denmark Region").
