Astrakhan Oblast

Astrakhan Oblast (Russian: ) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). Its administrative center is the city of Astrakhan. Its governor is Aleksandr Zhilkin.
Area 44,100 km², population 1,005,276 (2002 All-Russian Population Census).

History
Astrakhan Guberniya of Russian Empire was created in 1717. It was on the South-Western outskirts of the empire and known as Astrakhan krai.As of 1917, it bordered with Saratov, Samara and Stavropol guberniyas, Don Cossack Voisko, Ural Cossack Host, Terek oblast (Терская область), Caspian Sea. It included the Kalmyk steppe and Kyrgyz steppe.
Since 1919 the geography of the guberniya/oblast has been changed many times. It assumed its present form in 1957.
