Atomic coherence

Encyclopedia : A : AT : ATO : Atomic coherence

When coherent electromagnetic fields interact with multi-level atomic systems, coherence between levels may be induced. This state is called atomic coherence.

This atomic coherence is essential in research on several effects, such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), lasing without inversion (LWI), enhanced dispersion without absorption, and nonlinear optical interaction with enhanced efficiency.
