Attica is a city in Fountain County, Indiana, United States. The population was 3,491 at the 2000 census. When the Wabash-Erie Canal was cut through Indiana, Attica was originally chosen as a port city. Lafayette was chosen instead, resulting in rapid growth while Attica remained a sleepy river town.
Geography
Attica is located at (40.290227, -87.246973)[Geographic references#1GR1].According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²), all land.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 3,491 people, 1,415 households, and 935 families residing in the city. The population density was 886.8/km² (2,300.6/mi²). There were 1,543 housing units at an average density of 391.9/km² (1,016.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.40% White, 0.03% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.52% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.52% of the population.There were 1,415 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 29.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,191, and the median income for a family was $45,137. Males had a median income of $34,665 versus $19,384 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,802. About 7.0% of families and 11.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.6% of those under age 18 and 7.2% of those age 65 or over.
