Atwater Village, Los Angeles, California
Encyclopedia : A : AT : ATW : Atwater Village, Los Angeles, California
Atwater Village is a neighborhood in northeast Los Angeles, California. It is bordered by the Los Angeles districts of Los Feliz on the west, Silver Lake and the Hollywood Hills of Griffith Park on the south, and Glassell Park on the southeast, and by the city of Glendale on the north and east. The Los Angeles River runs alongside it. Principal thoroughfares include San Fernando Road, Fletcher Drive, and Los Feliz and Glendale Boulevards. The Golden State and Glendale Freeways run along the district's western and southeastern borders, respectively.
As with much of the city of Los Angeles east of the river, Atwater Village has traditionally been a working-class Latino neighborhood. However, this began to change in the 1980s: as middle-class Armenian and Filipino immigrants surged into the area, the Los Angeles Police Department managed to crack down on gang activity (in particular, suppressing the notorious Toonerville organization after a major crime spree in the mid-'90s). By 2000, the gentrification of neighboring Silver Lake had drawn many hipsters and working-class gays into Atwater Village, attracted by the area's relatively cheap real estate.
In the recent years, the neighborhood has been undergoing significant gentrification, especially north of Glendale Blvd.
Atwater Village also had the distinction of being the headquarters of the Beastie Boys' indie Grand Royal record label. The Beasties purchased the G-Son Studio on Glendale Boulevard with their advances from Paul's Boutique and used it to record most of their future records up until 2001, when Grand Royal officially went out of business.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 8,042 people in the neighborhood. The racial makeup of the neighborhood is 48.01% White, 2.15% African American, 0.66% Native American, 19.09% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 23.84% from other races, and 6.06% from two or more races. 47.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.External links
