Auckland War Memorial Museum
Encyclopedia : A : AU : AUC : Auckland War Memorial Museum
The Auckland War Memorial Museum is one of New Zealand's most important national museums and war memorials. It is also one of the most iconic Auckland buildings.
Although the museum itself dates from at least the 1860s, the present heritage building in the Auckland Domain was opened in 1929, and was extended in the 1960s, and again in 2004. The museum houses the largest collection of Māori and Pacific Island artefacts and treasures in New Zealand, and also serves as a memorial to the Aucklanders who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.
The museum is currently in the final stages of a major overhaul and addition, which has seen a great cupola / atrium added to the rear of the building. The new sections will add exhibition space, new areas for tour and school groups as well as a restaurant.
