Aud-X
Encyclopedia : A : AU : AUD : Aud-X
Aud-X is a multichannel audio codec, an extension to the famous MP3 sound encoding technology. Aud-X streams are backwards compatible with standard MP3 decoders and produce mono or stereo sound. If one uses a Aud-X MP3 decoder they can produce 5.1 multichannel sound. Aud-X was created by a group of multimedia enthusiasts from various countries including the USA, Israel and Poland. The codec is free, including a Software Developers Kit, but is not open source.
Format
Aud-X makes use of the flexible MP3 format file layout. MP3 sound is stored in parts called "frames". Each frame consists of header (Sync-Word, sampling rate, coding mode, and bitrate) and the body where core compressed sound data is stored, and finally there is space at the end of each frame that is not read by standard MP3 decoders but can store some additional information. This special space was used by mp3PRO and MP3 Surround codecs to store high frequency information in a more efficient way (mp3PRO) or surround channels information (MP3 Surround). Aud-X uses the free space to store all spatial information needed to recreate full 5.1 multichannel sound. The main difference between MP3 Surround and Aud-X is bitrate. Aud-X can store 5.1 sound at minimum 80 kbit/s and performs well at 128 kbit/s. MP3 surround is limited to 192 kbit/s only. The other competitive formats are AAC 5.1 and Vorbis 5.1 - both are not MP3 compatible and cannot accompany films in popular AVI container.
Aud-X consists of three parts: DirectShow filter capable of decompressing Aud-X content on any DS compatible software multimedia player (Windows platform only), ACM (Audio Compression Manager) encoder used to create Aud-X streams in ACM compatible software (eg. VirtualDubMod), and finally separate executable converter.
Quality
Aud-X streams can be produced in 4 different quality settings:
- 80 kbit/s 5.1 mp3 - mono backwards compatible - streaming quality
- 128 kbit/s 5.1 mp3 - mono backwards compatible - standard quality
- 192 kbit/s 5.1 mp3 - stereo and Dolby Pro-Logic II backwards compatible - high quality
- 192 kbit/s 5.1 mp3 - mono backwards compatible - superb quality
