In the science fiction TV show Stargate Atlantis the Aurora-class battleship is an interstellar warship type used by the Ancients in their struggle against the Wraith. Two ships of this class are known, the Aurora and the Orion, but some suspect that many more could be hidden throughout the Pegasus galaxy. They were large battleships, equipped with Drone Weapons, stasis pods, shields, interstellar hyperdrive (modifiable to intergalactic), and a very effective self-destruct.
While it is not known what the Ancients' designation for this class of vessel is, Aurora was the first of the type to be encountered by the Atlantis Expedition and the name has been used to describe further ships of the type.
Aurora
Originally on a reconnaisance mission to deliver important information about a weakness of the Wraith, the Aurora was badly damaged in a fight, presumably with the Wraith, forcing her crew to enter the stasis pods and await rescue from Atlantis. However they were believed dead by the Ancients and thus abandoned, leaving the crew to slumber, slowly aging over ten thousand years.
After the installation of a ZPM in Atlantis by Rodney McKay, power is transferred back to Atlantis's long range sensors, initiating a beacon calling all Ancient ships back to Atlantis. However, it would take millions of years for the Aurora to arrive at sub-light speed so the Earthship Daedalus is dispatched with a team from Atlantis. They discover the badly damaged ship and attempt to access the virtual reality environment in which the crew's minds are interacting.
According to Teyla's search the original crew numbered at least 329 members, based on the number of pods, and according to Rodney's search of the armoury the ship once contained Drone Weapons, although these have been depleted, presumably during her last battle.
The explosive force of the Aurora's self destruct is sufficient not only to vaporise the ship but also anything within at least a two kilometre radius; in the case of the Aurora, two Wraith cruisers.
Orion
The Orion was an Ancient warship in the Stargate Atlantis universe. It was first introduced in the episode "Inferno" when the team used it to evacuate a planet prior to a supervolcano eruption.
The name "Orion" was chosen by Sheppard, as the other name suggested, Enterprise, seemed unfitting to him (in contrast to Jack O'Neill's vocal support for giving that name to the Prometheus). The Ancient name for the ship, Hypopheralcus (the name of one of an Ancient Lantian general), was not considered.
The ship is an Aurora-class battleship, identical in base design to the one found in the Stargate Atlantis episode "Aurora". It was found inside a base on the planet Tiranus, where the world's scientists had tried to fix it for many years, with no success. While they had learned enough to turn separate systems on the ship on and off, they had no idea how to fix the damage done to it many years ago by the Wraith.
The ship is equipped with Ancient shields, drones, sublight engines and hyperdrive, possibly more technology not yet mentioned. Specifications of the ship are not available, however it is large enough to carry a sizeable crew, several times the maximum capacity of the Daedalus. Unofficial data suggests length about 500 metres and breadth about 220 metres.
Dr. McKay was forced to fix the ship when a supervolcano swallowed the planet's Stargate, trapping most of the planet's population, as well as Lt. Col. Sheppard's team. Though he realized he could not fix the sub-light engines in time, he activated the ship's shields and inertial dampeners, allowing the ship to survive the volcanic eruption for about 4.1 seconds, long enough to activate a hyperspace window. The Orion emerged from hyperspace in orbit around the planet, allowing the Daedalus to take its passengers to safety.
In the episode "Allies", Orion was under the command of Colonel Sheppard, to be used, defending Atlantis from a possible Wraith attack on the city. At this time, Orion was unable to fire weapons, but had propulsion and partial shields. It's drone weapons remained non functional.
} In the following episode "No Man's Land", the Orion was lost in a last ditch attempt to stop two hive ships from reaching the Milky Way Galaxy. Major Lorne and Dr Zelenka attempted to transfer shield power to the drone weapons, which resulted in bringing the weapons online, but made Orion vulnerable to Wraith weapons by causing the shield to shut down and transfer all their power to the drones. Once Orion dispatched a Hive Ship, it's partner opened fire on the Orion's unprotected hull. As a result, the ship was destroyed, but not before it's crew was sucessfully evacuated to Daedalus.
