Australian legislative election, 1990

Encyclopedia : A : AU : AUS : Australian legislative election, 1990

Legislative elections were held in Australia on March 24, 1990. All 147 seats in the House of Representatives were up for election. This was Bob Hawke's last election as Prime Minister and Australian Labor Party leader as he was replaced by Paul Keating in December 1991. This election saw a swing to the Coalition as Australia was suffering from high interest rates and an economic downturn.

The 1990 election saw the Hawke Government re-elected for a historic fourth term in office but with a reduced majority. The result of the election was as follows:

Australian Labor Party 78

Liberal Party of Australia 55

National Party of Australia 14

Independents 1
