AutoCAD DWG
Encyclopedia : A : AU : AUT : AutoCAD DWG
DWG, also commonly known as "drawing", is a file format for CAD drawings. It was originally used by the Interact CAD package [#endnote_Interact], and then taken over by Autodesk for their AutoCAD program. The DWG format, along with its ASCII variant, DXF, has become the de facto standard file format for CAD drawing exchange; it has been estimated that there are over one billion DWG files in existence.
The DWG usually changes about every three years or so as Autodesk adds new features to its flagship program, AutoCAD. Most of the changes have been to store new element types or add compression algorithms to DWG, with the intent being reduced filesize and improved performance. However, many end-users have also noted that the changes to the DWG format cause interoperability concerns. Most new versions of AutoCAD will open many older variants of DWG - AutoCAD 2007 will open versions of DWG back to 2.0. However, the past few releases of AutoCAD will only save back two DWG versions.
Historically, Autodesk has been reluctant to release information about DWG, especially their later additions and extensions. In 1998, an effort was launched to create an alternative standard for DWG, OpenDWG. The OpenDWG format aims to be compatible with DWG, but strictly as an open standard.
