AutoShare is a car sharing company in Toronto, Ontario. The service was launched in 1998 by North Toronto Green Community and other partners, with 16 initial members and three cars. As of December 2005, AutoShare has 2000+ members and 50+ cars available for use 24 hours per day. Members are billed a monthy administration fee and for their use of cars based on time of use and miles driven. In addition to using cargo minivans, Smart cars, Prius hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles, their commitment to sustainability extends to buying electricity from renewable-energy provider Bullfrog Power. The Toronto Parking Authority is a partner in helping locate cars near transit, in city parking lots.
Car sharing has been recognized in the City of Toronto's official plan as a part of the transportation system, and is being promoted by Toronto's Clean Air Partnership.
In the first three years of operation, 15% of AutoShare members sold a car after joining and 25% decided not to purchase a car. About one in four members reports increase transit and bicycle use.
